Crocheted holiday. Stitch after stitch sliding off a hook in a calming rhythm of focus. There is something utterly satisfying about decorating one’s home with items that were handmade made with love and with a particular purpose in mind. My favorite thing to crochet this time of year? Snowflakes. And this season, I bring you not one but three separate free patterns as part of my Snowflake 2014 collection.

Pour yourself a warm cup of tea, put on some Christmas music, and grab your favorite hook and yarn. These unique one-round crochet snowflakes are an ideal budget-friendly Christmas decor project for those who don’t have much time as they work up in mere minutes, and use the tiniest amount of yarn.

Snowflake 2014 Collection

• Materials

Any appropriate combination of yarn/thread and hook should work; I used Sugar n’ Cream Cotton in Ecru (medium weight) and a 5mm hook.

• Pattern Abbreviations

ch: chain
sc: single crochet
dc: double crochet
tc: triple crochet
sc2tog: single crochet 2 stitches together
dc2tog: double crochet 2 stitches together
tr2tog: triple crochet 2 stitches together
bl: back loop

Small Snowflake

(Chain 1 instead of the first sc)

Magic circle – *2scs into magic circle – ch 3 – sl st into bl of 2^nd ch from the hook, sc into bl of next ch* 6 times.

Finish with an invisible join: Cut yarn after the last single crochet. Leave a 6 in (15 cm) tail and pull it through the stitch. Insert the hook under both loops of the first chain of chain 3 at the beginning of the round, from the wrong side (back) to the right side (front). Pull tail end through. Insert hook under back loop of the last single crochet, from the wrong side (back) to the right side (front). Pull yarn through, weave the end securely in,  and trim excess.

Medium Snowflake

(Note: chain 2 instead of the first dc)

Magic circle – *dc2tog into magic circle – ch 4 – sc into bl of 3^rd ch from the hook, dc into bl of next ch* 6 times.

Finish with an invisible join: Cut yarn after the last double crochet. Leave a 6 in (15 cm) tail and pull it through the stitch. Insert the hook under both loops of the first chain of chain 4 at the beginning of the round, from the wrong side (back) to the right side (front). Pull tail end through. Insert hook under back loop of the last double crochet, from the wrong side (back) to the right side (front). Pull yarn through, weave the end securely in,  and trim excess.

Large Snowflake

(Note: chain 3 instead of the first tc)

Magic circle – *tr2tog into magic circle – ch 5 – sc into bl of 3^rd ch from the hook, dc into bl of next ch, tc into bl of next ch* 6 times.

Finish with an invisible join: Cut yarn after the last triple crochet. Leave a 6 in (15 cm) tail and pull it through the stitch. Insert the hook under both loops of the first chain of chain 5 at the beginning of the round, from the wrong side (back) to the right side (front). Pull tail end through. Insert hook under back loop of the last triple crochet, from the wrong side (back) to the right side (front). Pull yarn through, weave the end securely in,  and trim excess.
