Round jute and cotton stacking baskets. The long-awaited pattern has arrived! The twenty-page PDF file contains detailed instructions, illustrative photos, helpful tips, photo tutorials, and a summary of crochet skills needed for this project. Get it on jakigu.com or on Etsy.
I really enjoy working with jute and figuring out how it could best work for a basket that is meant to be used. Jute is an interesting material; stiff yet pliable at the same time – perfect for a base that won’t get soiled or fray easily.
The most rewarding part of creating this pattern, however, was the invention of a special stitch. It is vital to creating a decorative seam at a perfectly right angle right where basket sides attach to the base. How to successfully crochet this stitch is explained in great detail in a 7-page photo tutorial.

Blog Post Update / Addendum
I am so thrilled about the continued interest in baskets from my Jute and Cotton Series. I heard what you had to say, and based on your feedback I came up with additional designs.
A pattern booklet for a matching square set of jute and cotton stacking baskets is now available and can be found here on jakigu.com or can be purchased on Etsy.
In addition to the same decorative seam stitch as its round counterpart, the square basket pattern also features my proud invention: a unique stitch to create nice, sharp corners. I’ll walk you through it step-by-step in a wonderfully detailed photo tutorial.

And if you are as much in love with the neutral look of jute with cotton, you might like this geometric/lacey crochet basket set. It’s made in coiled crochet technique – a technique I am passionately trying to get to as many people as possible because it is hands down the best way to make sturdy, durable baskets. Pattern for this basket can be found here on jakigu.com or purchased on Etsy.

You can read more about the coiled crochet technique here. I adore both the simplicity and durability coiled crochet lends to baskets.
This coiled crochet bowl offers a wonderfully practical introduction to the concept. Make a set of lovely stackable bowls while you learn and master this helpful technique. Pattern can be found in both jakigu.com and Etsy pattern shops.

When I say “a pattern,” I mean so much more than a couple pages of instructions written in crochet shorthand. My patterns are highly detailed PDFs with beautifully organized pages filled with tips, photo tutorials, detailed step-by-step instructions, explanation of each stitch needed to complete the project, and high quality images. Just take a closer look at the 54-page guide for these bowls:

These adorable coiled baskets with handles take the simple bowl design one step further with the addition of practical handles. Buy the equally detailed pattern here on jakigu.com or in my Etsy shop.

I describe the handle construction in detail in an additional 46-page step-by-step photo tutorial.

And while I have been proudly selling my patterns Etsy shop since 2012, jakigu.com has become my online home and I want you to feel special every time you visit.

I love the idea of using jute with yarn! Have you thought of making square or rectangular baskets? I’d love to have a pattern for that as well. Thanks for your inspiration.
Thanks, Laura! I love the combination of the two materials as well. By popular demand, I am working on a set of square baskets right now. Patterns will be available in about a month. I’ll post the announcement when they’re ready here on the blog, on Facebook, on Pinterest, and on Twitter. Are you following JaKiGu yet?

Would you be willing to give some more info regarding the materials you are using for this pattern? I’m especially interested in knowing about the cotton yarn you are using. I am looking for a basket project that would use worsted weight yarn.
The pattern calls for medium weight (such as worsted) yarn. I used Sugar ‘n Cream cotton.
Wow! I’m so glad I found your blog π Thanks for sharing these! This is ingenious!
What a beautiful baskets! So, I’ve used jute to make a bag, then my finger got really hurt and had to stop making, can’t imagine making three big baskets like those! Do you have any good advice on either material (softer jute brand? good crochet hook?) or technique, like wearing some protective finger sack?
I know… Jute is not silk, that’s for sure! Honestly, I got used to the roughness quite quickly, and it doesn’t bother me at all now. One adjustment I made to make it easier on my fingers is that I do not wind the working jute around my index finger like I normally do with softer yarns but only hold it between my left thumb and index finger. I know some people hold any yarn like this, so it’s not a novel invention by any means, but it does prevent a possible cord burn π Someone also suggested wearing cotton gloves – I haven’t tried it, but I imagine it might work, too. Thank you so much for the compliment on the baskets!
These are lovely baskets! What type of jute is required for your pattern? I’ve seen several different thicknesses at the craft store.
It requires a 3-ply jute, 3 mm thick (8.5 wraps per inch). I used the Hobby Lobby brand, but in the pattern I included tips on how to find a suitable substitute. I’m so happy you like the baskets! Contact me via Etsy and I’ll be happy to send you a 50% off coupon code for the pattern π
I love the baskets!!! I wonder, how hard is it on the hands crocheting jute? My hands are super sensitive with arthritis.
I get asked this question often – though not in connection to arthritis. I used to suffer from juvenile arthritis as a child, and I know it’s not fun!
I’ll be blunt: jute is tough. It’s not soft, and it doesn’t glide up and down a finger. It *can* be unpleasant to work with. Its roughness doesn’t bother me, but I can see how jute might not be the most popular material to work with.
Whenever I work with jute, I hold the cord between my left thumb and index finger instead of winding it around my fingers. Someone also suggested wearing cotton gloves when crocheting with jute. I haven’t tried it, but I can see how they might be helpful, too.
how do i go about getting the free directions for these very pretty baskets???
Hi, Marj: Pattern for these baskets is not available for free. It can be purchased at jakigu.etsy.com. I *can,* however, offer you a 30% off coupon, if you’d like π

I love these baskets!
I’d like to have the coupon code as well but I’m confused by all the different posts: one says 50% off, one says 25% off, another says buy one get one half off, and then there’s an offer of 30% off in the comments… I suppose I’ll be happy with whatever you offer but I thought I’d point out how confusing it all is! TIA for the coupon!
Thank you for pointing out “inconsistencies” regarding my coupon codes. I’ve edited the posts to minimize confusion.
As for the various coupon codes offered throughout the comment section – they span over the period of more than a year now. I get excited whenever people comment on my blog, and I love making my readers feel special (because they are to me) by offering them special deals. There is no system to it; they are just personal replies to individual comments, frozen in space and time, however inconsistent they might seem π
Your very special coupon code should be in your inbox!
These are stunning — and exactly what I’m looking for. I now know what I’ll be making for everybody for Christmas, birthdays, Mother’s Day, etc. for a while. Can’t wait to get your pattern!!! Thanks for designing these!

Happy Crocheting!
Greetings JaKiGu,
I love the baskets very much. My problem is that I’ve never tried crocheting before, do you think I can manage with the patterns or should I search for some basic manuals first? Thank you!
Hi, Antoniya,
Hooray on thinking about learning to crochet! It’s not difficult at all; it’s portable, and you really only need a hook and some yarn.
As far as the Jute and Cotton baskets are concerned – though I never discourage anyone from giving it a go – I do emphasize that this is an intermediate level pattern. Not because the crochet technique is difficult – on the contrary, you only need to know how to work a slip stitch, chain stitch, and single crochet – but because working with jute is unlike working with yarn. It’s stiff, harder on fingers, and much more challenging to start with.
How about looking online for a photo/video tutorial on making a simple basket? A basket that also uses only sc, sl st, and ch st. That way, you’ll get the idea of how a basket is made, while practicing your basic stitches. If you feel confident, then by all means, give jute a try!
