I really enjoy working with jute and figuring out how it could best work for a basket that is meant to be used. Jute is an interesting material; stiff yet pliable at the same time – perfect for a base that won’t get soiled or fray easily.
The most rewarding part of creating this pattern, however, was the invention of a special stitch. It is vital to creating a decorative seam at a perfectly right angle right where basket sides attach to the base. How to successfully crochet this stitch is explained in great detail in a 7-page photo tutorial.

Would you be willing to give some more info regarding the materials you are using for this pattern? I’m especially interested in knowing about the cotton yarn you are using. I am looking for a basket project that would use worsted weight yarn.
The pattern calls for medium weight (such as worsted) yarn. I used Sugar ‘n Cream cotton.

What a beautiful baskets! So, I’ve used jute to make a bag, then my finger got really hurt and had to stop making, can’t imagine making three big baskets like those! Do you have any good advice on either material (softer jute brand? good crochet hook?) or technique, like wearing some protective finger sack?
I know… Jute is not silk, that’s for sure! Honestly, I got used to the roughness quite quickly, and it doesn’t bother me at all now. One adjustment I made to make it easier on my fingers is that I do not wind the working jute around my index finger like I normally do with softer yarns but only hold it between my left thumb and index finger. I know some people hold any yarn like this, so it’s not a novel invention by any means, but it does prevent a possible cord burn 🙂 Someone also suggested wearing cotton gloves – I haven’t tried it, but I imagine it might work, too. These are lovely baskets! What type of jute is required for your pattern? I’ve seen several different thicknesses at the craft store.

I love the baskets!!! I wonder, how hard is it on the hands crocheting jute? My hands are super sensitive with arthritis.
I get asked this question often – though not in connection to arthritis. I used to suffer from juvenile arthritis as a child, and I know it’s not fun!
I’ll be blunt: jute is tough. It’s not soft, and it doesn’t glide up and down a finger. It *can* be unpleasant to work with. Its roughness doesn’t bother me, but I can see how jute might not be the most popular material to work with.
Whenever I work with jute, I hold the cord between my left thumb and index finger instead of winding it around my fingers. Someone also suggested wearing cotton gloves when crocheting with jute. I haven’t tried it, but I can see how they might be helpful, too.

Hooray on thinking about learning to crochet! It’s not difficult at all; it’s portable, and you really only need a hook and some yarn.
As far as the Jute and Cotton baskets are concerned – though I never discourage anyone from giving it a go – I do emphasize that this is an intermediate level pattern. Not because the crochet technique is difficult – on the contrary, you only need to know how to work a slip stitch, chain stitch, and single crochet – but because working with jute is unlike working with yarn. It’s stiff, harder on fingers, and much more challenging to start with.
How about looking online for a photo/video tutorial on making a simple basket? A basket that also uses only sc, sl st, and ch st. That way, you’ll get the idea of how a basket is made, while practicing your basic stitches. If you feel confident, then by all means, give jute a try!
