work in progress: jute and cotton crochet basket

My obsession with jute and cotton continues.

Jute and Cotton Crochet Basket by JaKiGu

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder – and to my eye, (almost) anything made with soft brown jute and creamy ecru cotton looks stunning.

Jute and Cotton Crochet Basket by JaKiGu

This basket is a true yin and yang creation.

**********

UPDATE

And the pattern for this lovely basket (three, actually – it’s another stacking set!) is now finished and available right here on jakigu.com and via Etsy.

**********

It’s so simple, and still; it’s hard to take one’s eyes off of it. The lacey effect of cotton softens the harsher lines of padding jute cords. The backs of stitches create a beautifully modern, geometric design on the inside of the basket, making the inside just as interesting – if not even more intriguing – than the outside. And despite its delicate appearance, this romantic basket is, in fact, considerably sturdier than my original round jute and cotton baskets. It holds its shape so beautifully one might think it were crocheted over metal hoops.

Jute and Cotton Crochet Basket by JaKiGu

I simply can’t decide what I like more about it: the geometric design on the inside, the symmetrical jute base and trims, or the outer cotton overlay. All these elements are quite unique in the world of crochet baskets.

Jute and Cotton Crochet Basket by JaKiGu

Crochet has potential to be old fashioned. Reminiscent of 70’s basement decor. Stiff as Victorian doilies.

But not this basket. This is not your gramma’s kind of crochet anymore. In this basket, the new and the old melt into something surprisingly contemporary.

Alright. If you can’t tell, I am pretty excited about this basket. But I am ready to stop tooting my own horn. After all, mine might be the only eye to which it looks beautiful. And I’m OK with it.

Still, if you fell in love with this basket as fast and deep as I did, hold on tight. I am already writing a pattern.

crochet pattern: picture frame with fan edge

Crocheted picture frame with a fan edge – now available for download in my Etsy shop.Crochet Picture Frame Pattern by JaKiGu
I designed and wrote this frame pattern in the spring. I crocheted more than forty of them in this lovely lilac purple for the custom order I was working on at the time.
Crochet Picture Frame Pattern by JaKiGu
I love purple, I love lilac, and I love spring.
Crochet Picture Frame Pattern by JaKiGu
But recently, a different season and different colours have been on my mind. Christmas with its trademark pine green, cardinal red, and golden yellow, and of course, the classic candy cane red and cream white.
Crochet Picture Frame Pattern by JaKiGu
I crocheted a couple fan-edged frames in the red and white combination, inserted zen snowflake art, hung them on the wall, and it immediately felt like the air was a little crisper, and the mood was a little more magical. I swear I can almost hear the jingle bells.
Crochet Picture Frame Pattern by JaKiGu
Whatever colour you decide to crochet these frames in, my pattern is super easy to follow and even a beginner crocheter can finish a frame well in under an hour. In addition to the pattern itself and useful, close-up images, the downloadable PDF comes with stitch knowledge base, and tips on finishing, blocking, stiffening, and cleaning crochet frames. Each purchase also comes with a bonus PDF with several ideas on how to finish the back of the frame to hold miniature art securely in place. And while you’re there, see what else is available at JaKiGu on Etsy!

crochet pattern: pinwheel coaster

This pattern is now available for free.

Crochet Coaster Pattern by JaKiGu

Pinwheel coaster with scalloped edges.

Crochet Coaster Pattern by JaKiGu

It’s so easy to get carried away and make it in all the colour combinations imaginable.

Crochet Coaster Pattern by JaKiGu

I usually don’t crochet in vibrant colours (with the exception for my circles necklace and yellow nursing necklace), so this project has been especially joyful.

Crochet Coaster Pattern by JaKiGu

It’s an easy-to-follow pattern which requires the ability to work basic stitches, join in new colours, and work rounds in non-traditional ways.

Crochet Coaster Pattern by JaKiGu

I am especially excited about the format of the PDF itself. I gave the layout of the pattern document a thorough makeover, and the document is now 3 pages long, with pictures, written pattern, and many bonus sections, such as finishing tips and explanations of how to work each of the stitches required to make the coaster. Judge for yourself – doesn’t it look fresh, and exciting?

custom made crochet picture frames

Life is full of exciting twists and turns – many of which have very little to do with our plans or intentions.

My store, for example, at the moment only offers PDF crochet patterns. Before I got pregnant with Bubba, I used to sell resin and wire bobbin lace jewelry, too. But I never really desired to sell finished crochet items there. For one, I get bored easily, and making the same thing over and over would certainly take away from the joy crocheting otherwise brings me. Plus, I am a slow crocheter. And now with Bubba, I am even slower! Crochet items on Etsy are so competitively priced that I would either have to be the most expensive seller, or make peace with the fact that when it’s all said and done (or, crocheted and shipped), I made about 50 cents an hour.

So it was kind of peculiar when I got contacted twice in the last week with two separate custom crochet requests. So peculiar, in fact, that I excitedly agreed. To both.

One order is already with it’s new owner down in sunny Florida. I shipped it so fast I forgot to even take a real photo – all I have are these two cell phone snapshots.

The second order is larger and I am still working on it. It consists of six frames – two in teal, and four in grey. I instantly fell in love with this colour combination, and can’t wait to see all of the frames together. Here’s a sneak peek – I have finished two of the frames.

The pattern for the starburst trio is available in my shop here. The teal and grey frames can be made with this pattern here. And while you’re at my shop, look around for other picture frame patterns. There are seven in total, and I hope to have a full dozen available by this summer.

free crochet pattern: black-and-white crochet teething ring

Ever since our little Bubba was born in September, I have been on the lookout for toys for him. Sadly, almost everything commercially available and marketed to ages 0 months+ is not necessarily age-appropriate for clumsy newborns and their tiny hands. Toys I found were either too thick to grasp; too heavy for the accidental, yet inevitable drops on the little one’s face; or overly stimulating with way too many colours, textures, and sounds in a single item.

I knew if I wanted him to play with something different, I’d have to create it myself.

{What I didn’t know was how hard it’d be to find a minute here and there to finish the project. What would have normally taken me less than a single afternoon took me almost three weeks with a brand-new newborn at home!}

As I suspected, this simple high-contrast black and white squeeze-and-suck ring has quickly become one of B’s favourite toys.
