free crochet pattern: crochet snowflake 2018

Call me a purist, but in our house the magic of winter season doesn’t start until the first day of December. Which is today! Which made me want to go “Hooray!” more than once. ‘Tis the season.

My 5-year-old son was helping me decorate the house for the first time today. At one moment, he picked up a little jingle bell ornament, kissed it, and proclaimed, “Oh, jingle bell, how I’ve missed you!” Seriously, what can be cuter than that?

While we certainly share love for jingle bells, the quintessential holiday decoration for me comes in the form of a snowflake. Made of wood, paper, fabric, yarn, beads, twigs, wire, or the special Swarowski crystal snowflakes my husband has been gifting me in our son’s name every year since our boy was born – I cannot get enough of them!

An so, in order to perpetuate my love for snowflakes, I am kicking off an annual tradition of bringing you an original crochet snowflake design each year on the first of December.

Ta-da! Here’s Snowflake 2018!

things to make and do in 2018

My mind is filled with countless crochet ideas, and my fingers are busy hooking the yarn as fast as they can; yet I seem to be barely making a dent in my ever-growing project to-do list.

Once again I find myself wishing a day had 48 hours. At least.

Though I have been designing crochet patterns for a while, realizing how much work goes into turning a simple crochet idea into a high-quality crochet pattern can still pretty much paralyze me at times. Coming up with the design – even if it takes 10 versions – is the easiest part. It’s the post-production that seems to demand way more of my time than I ever calculate for it. Taking photos, editing them, writing captions; reading and proofreading; pattern testing; social media and marketing – none of which has to do with crocheting.

Of course, I could take the easy way out and throw some brief instructions in crochet shorthand onto two pages of a Microsoft Word document and call it a pattern, but that’s not me. I don’t take shortcuts. And producing a 25, 54, or an 87-page pattern takes time. A lot of time.

So, while I take, edit, and caption a thousand pictures, what are some of the crochet ideas and projects you can be looking forward to?

free crochet pattern: colorful necklace

colourful-circles-crochet-necklace-pdf-pattern-by-jakigu

A long time ago I made a lot of tiny crochet circles, using embroidery floss leftovers. Not sure what to do with them, I tucked them away until I rediscovered them one cold day last fall. After playfully arranging them for a while, they lined up and asked to be put together into a colorful necklace. I instantly liked the necklace – a cheerful, rainbow-colored piece of textile jewelry that’s not too bold for a conservative minimalist like myself. But when my son was about 4 months old, he started noticing the necklace, too; reaching out for it as he nursed. And just like that, this simple piece of jewelry became the first nursing necklace I made.  Continue reading free crochet pattern: colorful necklace
