work in progress: jute squares

Wow! There has been so much unexpected, yet greatly appreciated interest in my last crochet pattern – the Round Jute and Cotton Stacking Baskets. Thank you!

Stacking Baskets Crochet Pattern Designed by JaKiGu

I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about expanding my jute and cotton series and creating these baskets in other shapes – but it was never a number one priority for me.

But since so many asked about a pattern for square or rectangular baskets, I decided to answer your call. I have been diligently working on a new pattern – a pattern for a trio of stackable, square jute and cotton baskets.

Here’s an update on what I have accomplished so far:

I admit, the process is slow. The bottom is a simple square – it’s the sides that require a whole new approach, and a ton of research and work.

There aren’t many existing techniques which would create sharp edges while working in the round. Perhaps there is none. At least I haven’t found it. And I want these baskets to be worked in the round, not only because I want to maintain a uniform look throughout the series, but also because I want to avoid the need to sew the sides together.

I’ve been experimenting and experimenting, and then experimenting some more. And I am pretty sure I have created a unique way to crochet beautiful, sharp right corners while working in the round.

But you’ll have to wait for an update on the sides a little longer!

In the meantime – if you haven’t yet – you can get the pattern for the round baskets in my Etsy shop. It has been receiving rave reviews. It is, after all, more of an instructional booklet than a simple pattern, with 20 pages of tutorials, wonderful photos, tips and suggestions.

crochet pattern: round stacking baskets

The long-awaited pattern has arrived! Get it here or by clicking on any of the images below.

UPDATE: A matching square version of these popular round jute and cotton baskets is now also available in my shop. And both designs can be purchased together as a discounted bundle by clicking here.

When I say “a pattern,” I mean so much more than a couple pages of instructions written in crochet shorthand. It’s a PDF containing twenty beautifully organized pages with tips, photo tutorials, detailed step-by-step instructions, explanation of each stitch needed to complete the project, and high quality images.

Baskets crocheted with the help of my pattern are sturdy, highly functional, and very,  very pretty. They provide a lot of storage space, yet when not in use they stack perfectly to save room.

Even the smallest of the three is quite large – 17.5 cm (7 in) in diameter and 7.5 cm (3 in) tall. Medium basket is 22.5 cm (9 in) wide and 9 cm (3-3/4 in) tall. The large offers generous storage space with its 27.5 cm (11 in) diameter and 11.5 cm (4.5 in) height.

I really enjoy working with jute and figuring out how it could best work for a basket that is meant to be used. Jute is an interesting material; stiff yet pliable at the same time – perfect for a base that won’t get soiled or fray easily.

The most rewarding part of creating this pattern, however, was the invention of a special stitch. It is vital to creating a perfectly even, decorative seam right where basket sides attach to base. Thanks to the special stitch, basket sides are rising from the base at a perfect right angle. How to successfully crochet this stitch is explained in great detail in a 7-page photo tutorial.

I hope you like the baskets enough to want to make some for yourself. But even if crochet is not your passion, you can spread the word about this pattern. Pin it, tweet it, like it – you might help a friend discover a project they would otherwise never come across.

And while I also sell all of these patterns in my  EtsyRavelry, and Craftsy shops, jakigu.com is my online home and I want you to feel special every time you visit. That’s why here you’ll always find my patterns at a 25-50% discount.
