Experiments & Variations

I have made more of these rainbows than I care to count. In fact, it is truly the only crochet object of which I ever made more than 3.

Repetition kills my motivation and creativity.

But these rainbows are different. Endless color combinations. Quick work-up time. Instant joy.

Get the pattern – it’s worth it. I promise.

Where macrachet started

As with many fusion ideas, macrachet as a solid concept evolved over time, in a true one-thing-led-to-another way.

While perfecting my coiled crochet technique (used in this free crochet vessel pattern), I ended up with many gauge samplers that looked like little mats and reminded me of woven coasters or place settings. One peculiarly colorful piece had me think it was cute enough to hang on the wall.

That piece sat on my desk for a long time, all the while I indulged in my favorite pastime: looking for new fiber artists on Pinterest and Instagram. Somehow, the algorithm focused heavily on macramé and suddenly, whenever I looked at the little mat on my desk, my brain saw not macramé, but a whole new dimension of possibilities in the world of crochet.
