After last year’s hiatus and with a slight delay, I am excited to continue the annual jakigu.com tradition of starting the season with a free snowflake pattern. Crochet snowflake 2022 is a delightfully simple crochet project that utilizes only the chain, slip, and single crochet stitches.

The guiding force behind this year’s design has been the idea of simplicity and minimalism. Yes, snowflakes are notorious for complex and intricate designs, but this year my mind was craving something I could finish with my eyes closed. Which is almost possible with this quick one-round crochet pattern.

Crochet Snowflake 2022

MATERIALS

#12 DMC Cotton Perle
1.5 mm hook (No. 2)
scissors
needle

Feel free to experiment and use any appropriate thread or yarn and hook combination. Gauge is irrelevant to the success of this project. The bigger the hook and the thicker the yarn, the bigger the snowflake; and vice versa.

STITCHES + TECHNIQUES

Chain stitch
Single crochet stitch
Slip stitch

Slip knot
Adjustable magic loop (link)

PATTERN

Into a magic adjustable loop, work *sc, ch 20, sc, ch 10, sc, ch 30, sc, ch 10* 4 times. Work a sl st into the first sc to join.

Break Yarn.

FINISH

Weave all ends in on the wrong side with a needle. Trim excess.

Stiffen your snowflake. I recommend a 1:2 Elmer’s glue to water ratio. I have written detailed stiffening instructions with my 2018 crochet snowflake pattern.

MODIFICATION

Instead of one 30-chain, you could work a 60-chaim. It would give the snowflake the look of a star burst – like the Star of Bethlehem. That design could also be used as a delicate crochet cross.
