A reader recently reached out to me, asking where she could find a link to the coiled vessel I teased a couple of years ago. I had to giggle – like so many of my creative plans and ideas, publishing this pattern never materialized. I felt bad, though, so I offered sharing my project notes with her.
And after I transcribed my messy shorthand into an email for her, I realized I had just drafted the skeleton of that long-awaited pattern. A little more work here and there and – though I would love to take some updated photos – I feel good enough about sharing it with everyone. I hope you give this coiled vessel a try – and if you do make it, tag me @instajakigu so that we all can admire your skills!

Coiled Vessel
MATERIALS
- 3 mm jute
- 5.5 mm crochet hook
- 7/32 inch cotton clothesline with polyester core
- Upholstery needle; scissors
STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS
sc = single crochet stitch; scs = single crochet stitches
inc = increase
* = repeat stitches between asterisks the number of times indicated after the second asterisk
TECHNIQUES:
- Adjustable magic loop
- Coiled Crochet (explained in detail my Sturdy Baskets with Handles crochet pattern booklet)
- Shaping is also explained in my Sturdy Baskets with Handles crochet pattern booklet, but in this vessel it is much more flexible and forgiving given the organic shape of the vessel. Feel free to shape as and when it feels right.
- Working with two crochet hooks (optional)
NOTES
- Use one strand of jute or cotton medium-weight yarn.
- The vessel is worked in a continuous spiral; the rounds are not joined. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
- Work Rounds 1-2 without a coil.
- If you find it hard to work the stitches of the first couple of rounds (because jute is stiff, especially in that tight beginning spot), consider working with two crochet hooks.
